Baghdad:
#1: Five people were killed and 20 others wounded in two successive roadside bombing attacks that hit northern Baghdad late on Thursday, an Interior Ministry source said. The first roadside bomb went off in Autafiya district in northern Baghdad and struck a passing car on Thursday evening. The second one ensued when police and civilians gathered at the blast scene later, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The two explosions killed five civilians and wounded 20 others including four policemen, the source added.

Five civilians were killed and twenty injured in a bomb blast in Itafiyah area, central Baghdad, security sources said today. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that the bomb exploded in crowded street which led to the injuries and material losses in a number of civilian vehicles.

#2: Earlier in the evening, another roadside bomb detonated near a school playground in Zaferaniya area in southern Baghdad, wounding five people, the same source told Xinhua.

Five civilians were injured due to a bomb blast near a football playing yard in southeast Baghdad, police sources said today. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that the bomb was planted in the yard. It exploded when young men gathered to play football and led to the injuries among the spectators.

#1: Two missiles fired by a U.S. drone aircraft hit a car in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on the Afghan border on Thursday, killing four militants, local intelligence officials said. There was no independent confirmation of the strike.

Baghdad:
#1: A soldier was killed and two wounded in an armed attack in west Baghdad, security sources said today. One of the attackers was killed and another one arrested, the source told Aswat al-Iraq. The source added that an armed group were riding a civilian car when attacked a military patrol with grenades, which led to the casualties. The police forces followed the attackers and killed one of them and arrested another.

#2: (taji area) A security force, northern Baghdad, managed to control and explode two car bombs. A security force in anti-m unit blew up the two cars in Taji town and Al Mushahada area in Tarmiyah, spokesman of Baghdad operations’ command, General Kassem Atta, told Alsumarianews.


Hilla:
#1: Gunmen opened fire at one of the representatives of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, wounding him and one of his relatives near his house in western Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, late on Wednesday, police said


Balad:
#1: Gunmen in a car killed a member of the Yathrib town council, near Balad, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, police in the town said.


Samarra:
#1: Gunmen threw hand grenades at a police check point, wounding four policemen on Wednesday night in Samarra, 100 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.


Sulaimaniyah:
#1: Turkish military aircrafts attacked on Tuesday night border regions in Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region, eye witnesses in a border village in Bashdar District reported. The shelling caused a state of panic among residents, witnesses added. The bombardment, which lasted for more than 2 hours.

#2: Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) had reached a deal earlier with Iranian Government to stop clashes in return of halting attacks on border regions in Iraqi Kurdistan.


Mosul:
#1: A civilian was killed by gunmen north of Mosul, security sources said today. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that unknown gunmen killed the man who works as a farmer, west Mosul.


Al Anbar Prv:
#1: A roadside bomb went off and a car bomb detonated in succession in central Ramadi, 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad, killing one civilian and seriously wounding 14 others, including five policemen, police said.

One civilian was killed and five wounded, including two cops, in two blasts that struck Ramadi, security sources said today. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that the toll from the two consecutive explosions east of Ramadi reached to one civilian and wounding five, including two cops. There was a five minute gap between both explosions.



Afghanistan: "The Forgotten War" 10 years later (10/7/01)
#1: The Taliban opened fire on a bus in southern Afghanistan Thursday killing two civilians, including a child, and wounding 16 others, a local official said. The attack came after the bus driver ignored demands from the militants to stop as he drove along a road in the troubled Gereshk district of Helmand province. A man and a child were killed, and eight women, four men and four children were injured, provincial spokesman Daud Ahmadi said.

#2: Afghan intelligence officials said today that they have broken up a cell which was plotting to kill President Hamid Karzai, arresting six people in Kabul whom they claimed were affiliated with al-Qaida and the Haqqani militant group. Intelligence service spokesman Latifullah Mashal said the cell included one of Mr Karzai’s bodyguards, as well as a professor at Kabul University and three college students.

#3: Four people including two law enforcement officials -- were killed in southwest Pakistan Wednesday when suspected militants opened fire on a police patrol car, according to a senior local police official. The suspected militants were riding on a motorcycle when they started firing on the car, Fareedullah Bareech told CNN. The attack -- which occurred in the provincial capital city of Quetta.

#4: Wali Jan, the second-in-command of a local police battalion, was killed when a bomb exploded as he left his house early Thursday in Trinkot, the capital of Uruzgan province, the province's police spokesman said. The policeman's son and bodyguard were wounded in the explosion, Farid Aiyel said.

#5: Also early Thursday, gunmen open fire on a bus in Greshk district of nearby Helmand province, killing one child and injuring 15 other people, including four children and eight women, the provincial governor's office said.

#6: Unidentified assailants attacked the NATO oil tankers and set the three of them on fire in Bolan district on Wednesday. According to the Balochistan Levies, the NATO oil tankers were carrying fuel for NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan and were on there way from Karachi to Chaman, when some unidentified armed culprits riding the motorcycles opened fire on the tankers in Hirok area of Bolan. Resultantly, three oil tankers caught fire and were reduced to twisted metal. The National Highway was blocked because of the fire, and traffic was disrupted on Quetta-Sibbi section of the highway for several hours.

#7: Gunmen shot and killed the acting police chief of Shindand district in Herat province on Thursday morning, local police officials said. The incident happened at 8 am local time when Kashmir Khan, the acting police chief, left his house for the office and was mown down by gunmen on motorbikes, Herat police officials told a TOLOnews reporter. Mr Khan was filling in as Shindand's police chief while Colonel Dawood, the regular district police chief, participated in a seminar in Kabul.

#8: Afghan and foreign troops killed two insurgents and detained several more during a clearing operation in Noor Gol district of northeastern Kunar province overnight, ISAF said.

#9: The shadow Taliban governor for Faryab province in the northwest of the country, Qari Ziauddin, was killed in a foreign forces air strike on Tuesday, ISAF said. Ground troops sent in later to assess the area killed four insurgents after coming under fire from the militants, it said.

#10: Afghan and ISAF forces killed "several" insurgents in Kandahar province after the militants opened fire on their patrol on Tuesday, ISAF said.

#11: Gunmen on motorcycles shot and killed four people, including two traffic policemen, on a road in the capital of the southwestern Baluchistan province, police officials said.

#12: Taliban militants fired four rocket propelled grenades at a Pakistani security checkpost in the South Waziristan tribal region, killing one soldier, security officials said.

#1: Gunmen attacked an Iraqi army check point, killing two soldiers and wounding three on Tuesday near Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Baghdad, police said.

One cop was killed and another wounded in an armed attack in the center of Baaquba city, security sources said today. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that last night an armed group attacked a police checkpoint in the center of the city with weapons equipped with silencers, which led to the casualties.

#2: A bomb planted inside a shop for selling CDs and tapes of songs killed one person and wounded six others on Tuesday, police said.


Taji:
#1: A roadside bomb went off near a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims and wounded four in the town of Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, an interior ministry source said. Another police source said five pilgrims were wounded.

#1: Gunmen in a speeding car opened fire and killed a local mayor in the town of Tuz Khurmato, 170 km (105 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.


Taza:
#1: A bomb attached to a lorry went off and wounded the driver on Tuesday in the town of Taza, 210 km (130 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.


Riyadh:
#1: A civilian was killed and two injured in a bomb blast in southwest Kirkuk, police sources said today. General Sarhat Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq that a bomb exploded in a civilian car, Riyadh area, 45 km southwest of Kirkuk, that led to the casualties.


Kirkuk:
#1: The body of a government-backed Sahwa militia member was found with gunshot wounds in the head and chest on Tuesday in the town of Qaiyara, 330 km (205 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.



Afghanistan: "The Forgotten War"
#1: At least eight civilians and one policeman were killed, and around 25 people were wounded, when insurgents attacked a police patrol on the outskirts of Kandahar city, the provincial governor's spokesman said.

#2: An Afghan soldier fired a rocket-propelled grenade at an outpost manned by French and Afghan troops in Kapisa province, north of Kabul on Monday, but caused no casualties, the French military said.

#3: An Afghan delegation dispatched to investigate reports of civilian deaths in a NATO raid in eastern Afghanistan on Sept. 25 has found that 13 people were killed and that some of them were armed, the president's office said. Villagers said the operation by foreign and Afghan troops had killed civilians, which prompted the investigation. ISAF sent its own team to the area and has finished its assessment but has so far not released its findings.

#4: At least 13 people were shot dead by gunmen in a suspected sectarian attack on a passenger bus in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, police said.

#5: Afghan and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) eliminated two Taliban insurgents and captured five others in Helmand province 555 km south of Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday, a press release of the alliance said.

#1: A roadside bomb targeted an Iraqi police patrol, killing one civilian and wounding three others in Baghdad's western Ghazaliya district, a police source said.

#3: Security sources said today that an intelligence official was killed following an armed attack against him west of the capital, Baghdad. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that the assassins crossed his road and shot him dead.

#4: A car bomb in a village north of Baghdad wounded seven, including 3 soldiers, security sources said today. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that the car was parked on the side of the road. It detonated at the same time that a military convoy was passing.

#1: Gunmen opened fire at a Kurdish security force, killing two members and wounding five others, in Khanaqin, 140 km (100 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a local police source said.


Kirkuk:
#1: Director of Anti-crime department was killed today by unknown gunmen south of the city, Kirkuk police sources said. General Sarhat Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq that unknown gunmen fired against Anti-crime department director at Daqouq area.



Afghanistan: "The Forgotten War"
#1: Suspected Sunni extremists executed 12 Shiite Muslims after ordering them off a bus and lining them up Tuesday in southwestern Pakistan, ramping up a campaign of sectarian violence that has exposed Islamabad's inability to protect minorities. The gunmen who attacked Tuesday were riding on motorbikes and stopped a bus carrying mostly Shiite Muslims who were headed to work at a vegetable market on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, said police official Hamid Shakeel. The attackers forced the people off the bus, made them stand in a line and then opened fire, said Shakeel. The dead included 12 Shiites and one Sunni, he said. Seven people were wounded - five Shiites and two Sunnis.

#2: TWO Australian soldiers have been wounded in action in separate falls down embankments while participating in patrols in Afghanistan. Defence says one soldier has returned to restricted duties following the fall during a patrol on September 27. The second soldier fell on September 28 and remains in the medical facility at the Australian base at Daring Kowt.

#3: A truck carrying fuel for NATO forces was set ablaze Tuesday by suspected militants near Quetta, police said. The truck was on its way to NATO forces in Afghanistan when unknown assailants ambushed it and set it on fire near Quetta, said police official Muhammad Khalil.

#4: Afghan and NATO-led coalition forces killed 13 insurgents and arrested 15 others in operations in four provinces over the past 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

#5: At least six people were killed and many others injured on Tuesday morning when unknown gunmen opened fire at a vehicle in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan, local media reported.

#1: Gunmen using silenced weapons shot dead an Iraqi intelligence officer in Baghdad's western Amiriya district on Sunday, an Interior Ministry source said.


Diwaniya:
#1: Gunmen stormed the house of Imad al-Bidiri, a tribal leader, killing him and one of his guards in Diwaniya, 150 km (95 miles) south of Baghdad late on Sunday, a local police source said.

Al Nibaie:
#1: At least six people were killed in two back-to-back roadside bomb blasts near the Iraqi capital Baghdad late Sunday, Xinhua reported. Two members of the Sunni paramilitary group "the Awakening Council" were killed when their car detonated a roadside bomb in Al-Nibaie area, some 50 km north of Baghdad. A second roadside bomb exploded minutes later when another vehicle carrying militiamen rushed to the scene. It killed four other people, said a police official requesting anonymity.

Al Anbar Prv:
#1: Insurgents disguised as police officers burst into a police station in western Iraq Monday, opened fire and blew up an explosives vest before taking a number of people hostage, including the town's mayor, Iraqi officials said. The Iraqi Army was surrounding the police station in the town of al-Baghdadi, some 125 miles (200 kilometers) west of Baghdad in Anbar province, said the deputy provincial governor, Dhari Arkan. It was not immediately clear how many people were being held inside the station, or whether the attackers had made any demands.

A group of gunmen stormed a police headquarters in western Iraq on Monday and took at least 15 people hostages including police officers. Initially a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the front gate of the compound, which also houses the town's provincial council, leaving several people killed and injured, a police source told dpa.




Afghanistan: "The Forgotten War"
#1: At least two people have been killed and 16 more wounded during an explosion in southern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. The incident took place on Monday when an explosive-laden motorbike was detonated in the city of Kandahar, 450 km south of capital city Kabul. Reports say the blast was aimed at killing Minister for Tribal and Frontiers Affairs Assadullah Khalid and that he has survived the attack.

#2: Shortly afterwards in a different part of the city, a suicide bomber wearing army uniform struck inside an army garrison. "It was a suicide attack that killed one guard and the attacker, two army soldiers were wounded," said General Abdul Hamid, commander of the army unit whose garrison was struck.

#2: Afghan and NATO-led coalition troops killed multiple insurgents during an operation in Dzadran district, eastern Paktia province, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement. It did not say how many militants were killed.

#3: Afghan and NATO-led troops killed 11 insurgents during operations in six provinces of Afghanistan in the last 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Monday

Other News of the Day

DoD identifies Georgia soldier killed on Friday by insurgent indirect fire near Kirkuk. 23-year-old Spc. Adrian G. Mills of Newnan, Ga., was assigned to the 272nd Military Police Company, 519th Military Police Battalion, 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

Sadrist movement calls for demonstrations today to call for the rapid departure of U.S. troops. There have been intimations from top U.S. military officers that some troops should remain after the Dec. 31 deadline for withdrawal, and the response from Prime Minister Awlaki's office has no always been unequivocal.

Afghanistan Update

Nine Afghan soldiers are killed and four injured by a roadside bomb in Gardez, Paktia Province.

Hundreds demonstrate in Kabul against Pakistan's shelling of the border region in Kunar and Nuristan, and alleged involvement in the murder of Burhanuddin Rabbani.

Pakistan PM Raza Gilani says Hamid Karzai has "some misconceptions" regarding the assassination of Rabbani. However, it appears he does not specify what these are.

However, a statement from Karzai's office says that an investigation has concluded that the perpetrator was a Pakistani from Quetta. And, Afghan Interior Minister Bismillah Mohammadi tells Parliament that the attack was plotted on Pakistani soil, and that the Pakistani directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence was involved. Separately, Rahmatullah Nabeel, acting chief of Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS), said that an individual involved in the plot, named Hameedullah Akhondzada, has confessed. A spokesman for NDS says "A confession from those we detained in regard to Rabbani's assassination shows a direct involvement of the Quetta Shura," referring to the Afghan Taliban governing council which is harbored in that city.

WaPo's Ernesto Londono reports that only 10% of the funds looted from Kabul Bank have been recovered. Failure to resolve the situation will be catastrophic for Afghanistan because many international donors have suspended payments to the country. So far, there have been no indictments, although two individuals have been detained. Most of the assets appear to be abroad and will be difficult to recover.

By the Way story: Remember Raymond Davis, the CIA operative who killed two people in Pakistan who he claimed were trying to rob him? After several weeks, the Pakistanis released him in exchange for "blood money" payments to the dead men's relatives. This incident set off a downward spiral in U.S.-Pakistani relations. "Deputies responding to an altercation between two men outside an Einstein Bagel in Highlands Ranch, south of Denver, took Raymond Davis into custody Saturday morning, said Sheriff's Lt. Glenn Peitzmeier. He was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors." Evidently this was a fight over a parking space. Have a bit of a short fuse, do you Mr. Davis? Hmmm.

#1: Two mortar rounds landed near a municipal council building, wounding four civilians in Baghdad's central Karrada district late on Thursday, a police source said.

#2: Three Iraqi civilians have been injured in an explosive charge blast on the main highway passing through west Baghdad on Saturday, a security source reported. “An explosive charge, planted on the main highway passing through west Baghdad’s Hay al-Adel district, blew off on Saturday, wounding 3 civilians that were close to the venue of the blast,” the security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.


Diyala Prv:
#1: An Iraqi civil guard has been killed and 3 others were injured in an attack by a group of armed men wearing military uniform, in Baaqaba city, the center of northeastern Iraq’s Diala Province on Friday, a security source reported. “A civilian, working as guard in a service project in Baaquba city, has been killed and 3 civilians have been injured in an armed attack by unknown gunmen, dressed in Iraqi Army uniform, the security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

#2: He said that the same area had witnessed an explosive charge blast early in the dazy, that caused no casualties, giving nor further details.

#3: A group of armed men have attacked the house of an element of the pro-government al-Sahwa (Awakening) group in northeastern Iraq’s Diala Province on Saturday, killing his mother and abducting his child sister, whilst 2 policemen were injured in a clash close to al-Sahwa element’s house in the city, the Chairman of al-Sahwa Councils in Diala reported. “A group of armed men, belonging to al-Qaeda organization, have launched an attack on Saturday on a house of al-Sahwa element, Ammar Samir, in Albu-Fayath village in Buhriz township, 5 km to the south of Baaquba, killing his mother and kidnapping his child sister,” Khalid al-Luheiby told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He said the armed men had planted a time-bomb close to the attacked house, that blew off against a police patrol, wounding a police officer and a policeman,” whilst a security force detained a suspected element in Saddam District, after the incident.

#4: In Diyala, Al Qaeda member was killed and two of the security forces were wounded during an exchange of fire northern Baaquba.

#5: In Diyala as well, a security guard was killed and another wounded in an armed attack northern Baquba.


Hilla:
#1: The death toll from a car bomb attack in central Iraq on Friday grew to 10, Interior Ministry officials said Saturday. The attack occurred during a funeral procession near the city of Hilla, south of the Iraqi capital. Forty people were wounded by the attack.


Kut:
#1: A special security force has foiled an attempt to blow up a passenger bus by a sticky bomb in Kut, the center of southern Iraq’s Wassit Province on Friday, a Wassit police source reported. “A group of Kut’s Anti-explosives Directorate elements have managed to foil an attempt to blow up a passenger car, using a sticky bomb in central Kut on Friday,” the police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He said that the explosive charge included a large quantity of explosive material, attached to a wire and a mobile phone to use them in blowing up the charge inside its garage, which is usually crowded during Friday holidays.


Irbil Prv:
#1: Turkish warplanes have resumed their raids on border areas of northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Province of Arbil on Friday night, an official of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) reported on Saturday. “The Turkish air bombardment began at 08:30 pm local time (05:30 pm GMT) Friday night on Khwakurk and Khanira areas of Saidakan township, north of Arbil,” Ahmed Deniz told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, adding that the raids had been intensive, but losses were not known yet.

#2: Iranian artillery raids had continued since more than 2 months, along with Turkish air raids on border areas and villages in Kurdistan Region, killing and wounding dozens of civilians and damaging houses, agricultural fields and other property, belonging to citizens in Kurdistan’s border areas.

#1: A suicide bomber has been killed, while wearing an explosive belt in his house east of the city of Mosul, the center of northern Iraq's Ninewar Province on Friday, a Ninewa police source reported. “A suicide bomber was killed at his house in Domiz district, southeast of Mosul on Friday night, while trying to wear an explosive belt, in preparation to attack some target in the city,” the security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

#2: An Iraqi doctor, working with the Iraqi Army, has been killed in northern Iraq’s city of Mosul, the center of Ninewa Province, on Saturday, a security source reported. “A doctor, with major rank in the Iraqi Army, has been killed in an explosive charge, planted under his car on Telkef road, north of Mosul,” the security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

#1: A roadside improvised explosive device detonated next to a police truck in the northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, killing at least one policeman and injuring several others, district officials said.

#2: Unknown armed men raided the house of a district governor in Takhar province 245 km north of capital city Kabul Saturday, leaving one person dead but the district governor escaped unhurt, police said. "Unidentified armed men attacked the house of Abdul Dayan, the governor of Yangi Qala district, at 03:00 a.m. local time today. Dayan escaped unhurt but one of his bodyguards was killed," deputy to provincial police chief Mohamoudul Hassan told Xinhua.

#3: At least five policemen were killed and nine others injured on Saturday morning in a bomb blast in Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said official sources. According to district coordination officer Farid Khan, the blast took place when a police van was hit a roadside bomb in Tor Ghar district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The remote controlled explosive, fixed on the roadside, destroyed the vehicle partially in which at least five policemen, including an officer, got killed on the spot while nine others were injured. A police official told local media that the police van was taking 32 police personnel from Tor Ghar district to the police training center in Abbottabad city when it came under attack in Joghar area of the aforementioned district.
