Afghan National Directorate for Security claims to have foiled an attack on the parliament and a second vice president, planned in part by a Pakistani militant. The plotters were said to be in possession of a large cache of weapons, and Afghan army uniforms.
Reuters reports that Afghan officials have met with Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, who is in detention in Pakistan. This may signal a renewal of peace talks, and that Pakistan is willing to support negotiations.
Eleven Afghan police officers are slain in Nimroz province, apparently by a colleague who was a Taliban infiltrator.
Army Sgt. Major Gregory R. Trent of Norton, MA, dies of injuries suffered on July 31 in Shindand Province. He was a Special Forces intelligence sergeant, assigned to Company B, 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, N.C.
The Baltimore Sun gives a count of ISAF deaths since the intervention began. Remember when everybody used to count the U.S. dead in Iraq? Nobody seems to care about Afghanistan, but for the record, the total of U.S. military dead in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led military intervention began in 2001 now stands at 2,088. Britain again has the second highest number of dead, 424.

#1: Afghan defense ministry following a statement announced, at least 21 Afghan national army soldiers were killed or injured following militants attacks and roadside bomb blasts during the past 24 hours. The source further added, five Afghan soldiers were killed in Kunar, Paktiya, Logar, Maidan Wardak and Herat provinces of Afghanistan while 16 others were injured.
#2: According to local authorities in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan, at least 4 members of the Afghan special forces were killed in this province. Sangin district chief Mohammad Sharif Khan said 4 deceased individuals were members of the special security forces and were killed by a commander of the Afghan police forces. Mr. Khan further added the assailant police commander had invited 4 members of the special security forces in his home as guests and later shot the four individual early Friday morning.

#1: At least one soldier was killed and several others wounded on Thursday when terrorists attacked an army convoy in the Tribal Areas bordering war-torn Afghanistan. Officials said that terrorists attacked the convoy in the Qandharo area of Mohmand Agency in the wee hours of Thursday. "One of our soldiers was martyred and seven have sustained injuries after the attack," an official said, adding that a search operation had been started in the area. The officials further said that it was a remote-controlled device planted on the roadside, which exploded while the army convoy was passing through the area. Meanwhile, two other blasts were reported in Mohmand Agency.
#2: At least two people suffered injuries in an armed attack on Nato container in the Dasht area of Mastung district, some 45 km southeast of Quetta, police said. "Unknown armed men riding a motorbike opened fire at a Nato container carrying logistics for ISAF forces in Afghanistan on national highway," said an official adding, as a result of firing, two persons identified as Abdul Rehman and Mohammad Naeem sustained bullet shots. The assailants later set container on fire and fled from the scene.
#3: Up to six Afghan civilians were killed and one injured Friday morning when a car ran over a roadside bomb in the country's southern province of Helmand, a provincial police source said. "A civilian's car was running along a road in Dahzor area of Musa Qala district at around 9 a.m. local time today but the ill- fated vehicle touched off a bomb and the blast killed six passengers and injured one other," a senior police official Mohammad Ismail Hotak told Xinhua.
#4: In a separate development, a police officer shot dead four members of Afghan Special Forces in a checkpost in Helmand's Sangin district in the early Friday morning. "The police officer invited the four cops to the checkpost in Bostanzoi area of Sangin district but at around 2 a.m. local time Friday shot them while sleeping," administration district chief Mohammad Sharif told Xinhua, without giving more details.
#5: According to local authorities in eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan, a number of Afghan police officers were killed or injured following an explosion in central Ghazni city on Friday. Provincial governor spokesman Fazal Sabawon confirming the report said two Afghan police officers were killed and three others were injured following the blast. Mr. Sabawon further added the incident took place after a Ranger vehicle of the Afghan public protection forces struck with a roadside bomb.

#1: Two Afghan soldiers tried to gun down a group of NATO troops outside a military base in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, officials said. No international forces were killed, but one of the attackers was killed as NATO forces shot back. The Thursday morning attack took place outside a "coordination center" for Afghan and international forces in Laghman province, said German Lt. Col. Hagen Messer, a spokesman for NATO forces in Afghanistan. He said no NATO troops were killed but declined to say if any were wounded. The two men attempted to ambush a group of international soldiers outside the base but were quickly repelled, said a spokesman for the 201 Afghan army corps, Maj. Noman Hatefi. He said the second attacker was arrested but did not say whether by international or Afghan forces. The Laghman governor's office said in a statement that the second Afghan soldier was wounded by the return fire.
#2: An Australian soldier has been shot in the leg during a mission in Afghanistan. Defence says the soldier was hit in the left leg during a fight with insurgents in Uruzgan province. He was treated on the scene and then flown to a base at Tarin Kot for treatment.
#3: Taliban killed two police and wounded another in Andkhowi district of Faryab province today, police said Wednesday. The incident happened in at approximately 10:00 a.m. (local time) when Taliban gunmen attacked a police post in Beshkand area of Andkhowi district, Said Masud, spokesman for Faryab police, told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP). He said two police were killed and their commander wounded in the attack, adding the deceased commander was hailing from Pansher province.
#4: Afghan police backed by the army and the NATO-led force have killed 36 Taliban fighters, wounded 19 and captured 34 others over the past 24 hours, Interior Ministry said in a statement on Thursday. "The units of national police backed by the army and the Coalition Forces launched seven joint cleanup operations in Kabul, Kunar, Balkh, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Ghazni and Helmand provinces over the past 24 hours during which 36 armed Taliban militants have been killed, 19 wounded and 34 arrested," the statement said. However, it did not say if there were any casualties on the security forces.
#5: At least five Afghan civilians were killed and six others injured when a passenger bus touched off a roadside bomb in western province of Farah Wednesday, a spokesman for the provincial government said. "Up to five passengers were killed and six others injured when the bus travelling from capital city of Kabul to Farah city ran over a bomb, planted by the Taliban insurgents along a main road, in Farah's Bala Buluk district," spokesman Abdul Rahman Zhwandi told Xinhua. An estimated 45 to 50 people were in the bus and the death toll could go up in the blast that took place at around 5 p.m. local time as police forces are working to evacuate the victims to local hospitals, he said.
#6: According to local authorities in northern Kunruz province, heavy clashes were reported between Afghan security forces and militants in this province. Dasht-e-Archi district chief Sheikh Sadruddin said the clashes started around 1:00 pm local time on Wednesday and is still continuing.

#1: Afghan officials say two suicide bombers have attacked a provincial council as it met in the country's east. Authorities say at least one Afghan civilian was killed and several others wounded. A spokesman for the Kunar provincial government says the two attackers detonated their explosives outside the provincial council building on Wednesday. Spokesman Wasifullah Wasify says there were casualties but it was unclear how many. NATO reports an attack on a foot patrol in the same area, but details were unclear. The international military coalition said it was investigating.
#2: At least 18 insurgents have been killed in operations conduct by the Afghan forces and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in eastern Afghan provinces within 24 hours ending on Aug. 7, the ISAF's Regional Command- East (RC-E) said in a statement Wednesday. "A coalition air strike killed 10 insurgents in Tagab District of Kapisa province in response to Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and coalition forces received direct fire," according to the statement. ANSF and coalition forces killed six insurgents during a small arms engagement in Kharwar District (Logar province) and two other insurgents were killed in Ghazni and Logar provinces.
#3: At least nine people including two Frontier Corp officials were injured during a blast in the Hayatabad area. Police said that the explosion occurred at Hayatabad phase-III Chowk, and a security forces vehicle was targeted. Three kilograms of explosives were used in the bomb placed on the roadside, police added.
#4: At least three Balochistan Constabulary personnel were killed and 12 others wounded in remote-controlled bomb blast in Saami area of Shapuk, in Kech district on Tuesday. A Balochistan Constabulary convoy, comprising two trucks, was on its way from Quetta to Turbat when it was targeted with a remote-controlled bomb, Abdul Razzaq Sasoli, the assistant commissioner of Kech, told The Express Tribune. “At least three personnel were killed on the spot and 12 others were wounded – some of them critically,” Abdul Razzaq said, adding that the bomb planted on a roadside. A police official, Inham Lal put the number of fatalities at four. “The two trucks were destroyed in the blast,” he told The Express Tribune.
#5: A roadside bomb apparently planted to target the vehicles supplying supplies for the Nato forces in Afghanistan went off without causing any harm on Tuesday, tribal sources said. The sources said the explosives had been planted on the Jamrud Bypass Road leading to the Khyber Terminal in Khyber Agency where the paperwork for containers transporting supplies for foreign forces in Afghanistan is processed. The loaded trailers then proceed through mountainous Khyber Pass to Torkham border before crossing into Afghanistan.
#6: According to local security officials in Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan, a number of armed Taliban militants on Wednesday attacked a security check post on Kabul-Bamiyan highway. The officials further added the incident took place in Jalrez district on Wednesday morning at Zewlat village. Reports suggest that a convoy of the NATO troops were passing the area when the incident took place. A local security official speaking on the condition of anonymity said heavy clashes are going on between NATO troops, Afghan police with the Taliban fighters. The source further added around 40 fighters of Qari Nematullah and Qari Dil Agha, senior Taliban commanders were attacking the security check posts from two different angles.

#1: A roadside bomb killed nine Afghan civilians and wounded five more in the Paghman district, west of Kabul, according to a statement from Afghan President Hamid Karzai's office.
#2: In a third attack, a suicide bomber in a truck detonated near an ISAF military base, wounding at least 13 people in Logar province, just south of Kabul, provincial spokesman Mohammad Faqeer Darwish said. He said that two of the injured were Americans. ISAF spokesman Lt. Col. Hagen Messer confirmed that ISAF service members were injured in the explosion in the province's capital of Pul-e-Alam, but did not identify their nationalities nor say how many had been hurt.
A suicide attacker drove the explosives-laden pickup truck into a gate at the NATO base near Logar's capital of Pul-i-Alam, provincial police chief Ghulam Sakhi Roogh Lawanay said. The truck belonged to a local contractor who was authorized to work on the base, and the explosives were hidden under a load of gravel, Lawanay said. He added that the truck was able to enter an outer gate of the base before the driver slammed the vehicle into a second gate.
#3: The anti-government militants in Afghanistan use a new tactic that took many into surprise - using innocent donkey as bomb that claimed the life of a senior police officer and injured three others in the western Ghor province 360 km west of Afghan capital Kabul on Monday, police confirmed. "The rebels planted mine on a donkey and stopped it near the gate of the district headquarters of Charsada district and when the district police chief arrived at the gate to go to his office, the rebels exploded it by remote control, killing the police chief on the spot," police chief of Ghor province, Dilawar Shah Dilawar told Xinhua.
#4: Anti-government militants in a related incident gunned down the deputy to police chief of Shindand district in Herat province 640 km west of capital Kabul on Monday morning, police said. "Two unknown armed men riding a motorbike opened fire and killed the deputy police chief of Shindand district in the morning rush hour today," inspector general police of Herat province, Sayed Aqa Saqib said.
#5: A truck driver has been killed in an attack on a Nato supply tanker in north-west Pakistan, officials say. The tanker, part of a convoy of 18, was attacked by two gunmen on a motorbike as it travelled through Khyber Agency on its way to Afghanistan.
#6: six militants were killed and 11 others including three civilians wounded during a clash that erupted after a Taliban attack on a checkpoint in the Kohistanat district of Sar-i-Pul province, local police commander Farooq said.
#7: One policeman was injured and his father killed on Sunday night when Taliban attacked their house in the Mangoti area of Sar-i-Pul City, the acting police chief said.
#8: Four fighters were killed and a fifth detained during a raid by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on a heroin factory in the Abdulkhel area of Achin district in Nangarhar province, said the administrative head of the town, Moalim Mashooq.
#9: In the same province, militants attacked the Hesarak district headquarters from four directions at 10am on Monday, sparking a fierce clash with security personnel, said the district chief, Abdul Khaliq Maroof.
#10: In the central province of Uruzgan, one police officer was killed and four others during a clash were in the Sar Shakhlo area on the outskirts of Tirinkot, the provincial capital. Police spokesman Farid Ayel said police commander, Shah Mohammad, was killed by his nephews, who were also policemen.
#11: In the Deh Rawood district of the province, a tribal elder, Haji Naeem, was shot dead by the guerrillas late on Sunday when he was on his way home.
#12: Separately, the Ministry of Interior said three Taliban commanders were among eight fighters killed and three others detained during police operations in Logar, Paktia, Khost and Nangarhar provinces.
#13: According to local authorities in western Nimroz province of Afghanistan, a number of Afghan civilians were killed following night time military operation by coalition security forces in this province. Khashrod district chief Haji Mohammad Hashim said, at least four Afghan civilians were killed and two Afghan kids were injured during a military operation by coalition forces last night.
