Exclusive: CIA Falls Back in Afghanistan


Reported security incidents
#1: Dozens of assailants attacked NATO containers in the Wazir Dhand area of Jamrud in the tribal areas on Monday, killing two drivers, private TV channel quoted security officials as saying. Gunmen attacked three container trucks carrying NATO supplies en route to Afghanistan, killing two people, the officials said. Two other drivers were kidnapped by the attackers, the channel reported. It was reported that there were more than 20 assailants who fired at the NATO trucks and later set the containers on fire.

#2: A Pakistani soldier was martyred Sunday by firing from Afghanistan in the mountainous border tribal region of Bajaur when unidentified armed men attacked a security force’s checkpost. According to the official sources, the Frontier Crops official was killed at 11:45 am at the border area of Ghakhi of Lovi Mamond tehsil, 30 km from the agency head quarters Khar. A military statement said the incident happened at 11:45am. It was unclear whether the firing came from Afghan forces or from Pakistani or Afghan militants hiding across the border.

#3: Frontier Corps (FC) personnel on Monday claimed to have killed 10 militants in Balochistan's troubled Panjgur district. He said ten suspected militants were killed whereas three FC soldiers were seriously wounded during the operation.

#4: Unknown suspected militants on Monday blew up a 500 kv Tarbela Sheikh Mohammadi transmission line in the Badbher area situated on the outskirts of Peshawar. In charge Inqalab checkpost, Fazle Sher Khan said that the suspected militants had planted explosives on the tower and blew it up late night, however, no loss of life was reported

#5: Six people were killed and two others wounded in a coordinated Taliban attack in western Afghan province of Nimroz on Monday, police said. "One suicide bomber detonated a car bomb close to Dilaram District intelligence agency office. Four other militants tried to seize the building. They were killed in subsequent exchange of fire with security forces," deputy provincial police chief, Colonel Abdul Rahim, told Xinhua. "One police was killed and two policemen wounded. No civilian casualties took place," Rahim noted.

#6: Up to six police and two local leaders were shot dead early Monday by militants in northern Afghan province of Faryab, said an official. "The Taliban militants raided a security checkpoint in Gurziwall district at 2:00 a.m. local time, leaving six police cops killed," district governor Abdul Raziq Kakar told Xinhua. One policeman was missing following the attack, he said.

The same militants had also laid an ambush attack near a mosque at around dawn in the district, killing two pro-government local leaders, the governor said, adding an investigation was launched into the incidents in the province, 425 km northwest of national capital Kabul

In neighboring Farah province, an army spokesman, Abdul Raouf Ahmadi, told Xinhua that six militants were killed and two got injured when the army soldiers repelled a Taliban attack on army checkpoints in Push Rod district early Monday morning.

#7: At least 50 Taliban militants were killed and 36 others were injured following military operations in eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan. The interior ministry of Afghanistan following a statement said the militants were killed or injured during operations which were conducted in Gilan district four days ago.

At least 41 anti-government armed militants were killed following military operations by Afghan national army (ANA) soldiers.

#8: 4 Taliban militants killed, 13 others injured in Takhar clashes. According to local government officials, clashes between Afghan security forces and Taliban militants broke out in Cha Aab district on Sunday morning. Provincial governor spokesman, Sunatullah Temori said at least 3 Taliban militants were killed and 13 others were injured following the clashes.

The linked article from the Daily Mail has many photographs and more details. Flooding and landslides are common in Afghanistan in spring, but the scale of this disaster is possibly unprecedented.

A sticky bomb attached to an army jeep injures 2 civilian bystanders in Kunduz. According to Wakht, a civilian was killed.

Ten militants are said to be killed by a roadisde bomb in Chul Dokhtaran, Kandahar, which the Interior Ministry says they planted themselves.

Insurgents are also killed by their own bomb in Pul-e-Alam, Logar.

A Pakstani "seurity official" is killed in Bajaur by fire from Afghanistan. It is not known who is responsible.

Militants in Faryab kill an intelligence official who they abducted on Saturday.

More than 2,100 confirmed dead in Afghanistan landslide

#1: One Frontier Corps (FC) man was killed and another was injured in a bomb explosion in Balochistan province’s Bolan district on Saturday, a security official said. Khan Wasey, a spokesman for the FC, told Dawn that a security forces’ vehicle was on routine patrolling when it was attacked in Bolan’s Dhadar area in the morning.

#2: a bomb went off in Mehterlam, the capital city of eastern Laghman province, on Friday, injuring 18 civilians, an official said. "A total of 18 innocent civilians were injured as a sticky bomb blasted a police van in Mehterlam city at 09:15 a.m. local time today," spokesman for the provincial administration Sarhadi Zawak told Xinhua.

#3: At least 20 Taliban militants were killed in separate military operations conducted by Afghan national security forces in the past 24 hours.

#4: An explosion was heard in capital Kabul on Friday afternoon leaving one person dead. Deputy interior minister Gen. Ayub Salangi confirmed the incident and said at least one person was killed and another one was injured following the explosion. This comes as earlier reports suggest at least two policemen were injured following the explosion which took place as a result of a magnetic bomb in Arzan Qeemat area.

#1: At least six policemen were killed and several civilians wounded in suicide bombing in Afghanistan, authorities said. The bombing took place Thursday evening in the eastern Afghan province of Panjshir, Xinhua quoted the country's interior ministry as saying. The ministry statement said a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden sedan at a security checkpoint leaving six police officers dead and injuring several civilians. Unofficial sources said that 12 people were killed and more than 20 others were wounded in the attack in the province, 200 km north of Afghanistan's capital Kabul.

#2: In one attack, three Afghan police and two militants were killed in a Taliban attack on police checkpoints in Dasht-e-Archi district of northern Kunduz province early Thursday, the district governor Hamid Agha told Xinhua.

#3: Four policemen were killed when the Taliban launched an attack on security checkpoints in Ali Sheer district of eastern Khost province overnight. Three militants had been killed and one captured during the clash, the provincial government said in a statement.

#4: Gunmen shot dead a pro-government tribal elder and two others in a drive-by shooting in a restive Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said. The Chashma Pul area, five kilometres (miles) south of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, is known as a stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants. "Malik Qadir Khan was travelling to his village when four gunmen riding a car opened fire on his vehicle killing him and two others," a local administration official told on condition of anonymity.
#5: One and half dozen civilians were wounded as a bomb blast rocked Laghman's provincial capital Mehterlam city, 90 km east of Kabul on Friday, spokesman of provincial government Zarhadi Zawak said. "A total of 18 innocent civilians were injured as a sticky bomb targeted a police van in Mehterlam city blasted at 09:15 a.m. local time today," Zawak told Xinhua.

Afghan troops backed by Western air power killed at least 60 militants near the Pakistan border, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency said on Wednesday, in one of the biggest single assaults against the Taliban-linked Haqqani network. About 300 Haqqani insurgents and foreign fighters came under intensive fire on Monday when they tried to storm Afghan bases in Ziruk district of Paktika province, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in a statement. Monday’s battle occurred in the southeast province of Paktika.

#2: At least five militants were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb apparently planted by a rival group in Pakistan's troubled northwest, the Taliban and officials said Wednesday.

#3: Four troops including two local policemen were injured when a group of armed rebels attacked an outpost in eastern province of Nangarhar late on yesterday, an official said Wednesday. The incident happened in Farmasi area of Batti Kot district, where Chief Haji Ghaleb in a briefing with Wakht News Agency confirmed that two national and two local policemen were wounded.

NATO is reporting the deaths of two ISAF soldiers from insurgent attacks in  undisclosed locations in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, April 28th.

#1: At least 49 Taliban insurgents and five soldiers were killed following a massive attack by the militants in eastern Afghan province of Paktiya, a defence ministry official of the country said on Tuesday. "More than 500 insurgents attacked army after an operation was launched in Paktiya province. 49 militants and five soldiers have been killed," Xinhua quoted Mohammad Zahir Azimi, a defense ministry spokesman, as saying in his twitter account. Six army soldiers were also wounded during the exchange of fire between the insurgents and army in the province, 100 km south of the country's capital Kabul, Azimi said.

#2: At least three police personnel were killed and one policeman injured Tuesday when Taliban militants attacked a security checkpoint in Afghanistan. "The militants raided an Afghan Local Police(ALP)checkpoint in Alingar district in eastern Afghan province of Laghman early Tuesday, leaving three ALP personnel dead and injuring one policeman," Xinhua quoted the provincial government as saying in a statement.

#3: Three militants were killed on Monday during a gun battle between the security forces and militants in the Landi Kotal tehsil of the Khyber tribal region. According to military officials, these militants also included a commander who was allegedly involved in the attack on Landi kotal Fort which had destroyed a large ammunition depot a few days back. Two Frontier Corps (FC) personnel have also been injured in the gun battle with the militants.

#4: In an unrelated incident on Monday, two employees of a local aid agency were shot dead in Kohistan district of northern Faryab province, 425 km north of Kabul, district governor Imam Yar Taqwa told Xinhua earlier on Tuesday.
