Security Incidents for Monday, May 21, 2007
(1) MNF-Iraq is also reporting the death of a 13th Sustainment Command soldier when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device near the city of Ad Diwaniyah in Qadisiyah Province south of Baghdad. Two soldiers were wounded in the incident.
(2) The British Ministry of Defense is announcing the death of a 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment soldier at the British base at Sangin in Helmand Province from "an accident" that was non-hostile in nature on Sunday, May 20th. The NATO statement on the death can be found here.
(3) The British Ministry of Defense has announced the death of one of their soldiers in the city of Basra in southern Iraq. A resupply convoy travelling through the Al Tuwaysa district was attacked, wounding the soldier, who later died in a British medical facility in the city. The attack also killed a civilian truck driver who was driving an oil tanker that was blown over and set afire.
Baghdad:
#1: Meanwhile, a roadside bomb detonated near a group of Iraqi soldiers patrolling the Sunni-dominated Adil neighborhood in western Baghdad, killing three of the soldiers and injuring two others.
#2: the Iraqi newspaper Azzaman reported Monday that one of its reporters, Ali Khalil, 22, was kidnapped while leaving a relative's house in the increasingly volatile Baiyaa neighborhood of Baghdad and found dead several hours later. Khalil was survived by his wife and 1-week-old baby, the newspaper said.
#3: A mortar shell struck the roof of Iraq's parliament inside Baghdad's heavily protected Green Zone Monday, shaking the building but causing no casualties. Sheikh Sabah Saadi, an MP from the Shiite Fadhila Party, said the rocket landed on the roof of the parliament right above the speaker's office. "There are no casualties but there is slight damage to the office," he told France's AFP news agency.
#4: Four Iraqi policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in Wazirya district in central Baghdad, police said.
#5: The office of Adnan al-Dulaimi, the head of the biggest Sunni group in parliament, said that the Iraqi army had opened fire on his motorcade in Adil district in western Baghdad. There were no casualties
#6: The Iraqi army killed two insurgents and detained 69 others in Baghdad during the past 24 hours, the Defence Ministry said. Another 26 insurgents were detained in other parts of Iraq
#7: (yesterdays update) 24 dead bodies were found all over Baghdad : 19 bodies were in the west bank (Kharkh) -- 5 in Bayaa, 4 in Amel, 2 in Mansour, 2 in Doura, 2 in Jihad, 2 in Saidiya, 1 in I'laam and 1 in Hurriya. 5 bodies were found in the east bank (Rusafa) -- 2 in Kasra Watash, 2 in Kahira (Cairo neighborhood) and 1 in Sadr City.
#8: At least three people were wounded when two mortar rounds hit central Baghdad, police said.
#9: A roadside bomb exploded near a U.S patrol, wounding seven people in eastern Baghdad, police said
#10: Around 5:30 p.m. Two mortar shells landed in central Baghdad in Kahramana square. The shelling caused injuries to 3 civilians, damaged 2 cars and near by shops.
#11: Around 6:00 p.m. a mortar shell landed in Shurta Rabiaa neighborhood, 2 residents were killed and 12 were injured.
#12: Around 8:15 p.m. a parked car bomb exploded in Al Iskan neighborhood near the pediatric hospital Al Tifl Al Markazi. 5 civilians were injured.
#13: Police found 24 dead bodies in Baghdad. the following is the number of corpses found in neighborhoods of Baghdad: 6 in Bayaa, 5 in Amil, 2 in Ghazaliyah, 2 in Sileikh, 1 Adhamiya, 1 Husseiniya, 2 Karrada, 2 New Baghdad, 2 Sadr, 1 Waziriyah.
Diyala Prv:
#1: A group of gunmen in two cars attacked a minibus heading to Baghdad from a Shiite town north of the capital Monday, killing seven passengers including a child, police said. The bus, which left the town of Khalis, was driving near the violence-wracked city of Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, about 11:30 a.m. when it was ambushed outside the town of Hibhib, police said.
#2: Four people were wounded by a car bomb in the town of Khalis, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
#3: Police said three Iraqi soldiers were killed and four wounded in clashes with gunmen who attacked a minibus carrying off-duty soldiers near the town of Hibhib, near Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad. A hospital source and Iraqiya state television put the death toll at seven
#4: Mortar shells slammed into several neighborhoods of Baqouba city today morning. The shelling killed one resident and injured 12 (8 of the injured were women).
#5: In other violence Monday, two gunmen killed two police officers as they walked by the police station in Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles north of Baghdad
#6: Insurgents also fired mortar rounds into a bank in Baqouba as customers were waiting in line to collect their pensions, killing two people, police said
#7: Yesterday evening (Saturday 19t ), four tractor-trailer drivers were killed and ten injured (drivers and guards) when gunmen opened fire on a convoy of trailers carrying barricades at Sawajin village in Ghalbiya on the high way of Baghdad-Baqouba'
#8: A car bomb exploded in a parking yard of the Al Khalis police dept. 3 policemen were injured and one judge, Thamir Al Baiati was injured too. Police source said they suspect a policeman brought this car into the yard
#8: A group of gunmen kidnapped seven civilians, including a university professor, after setting up a fake checkpoint in the area of al-Othaim, north of the district of al-Khalis, Diala province, an official source from the Iraqi police said on Monday. "The kidnapped included Dr. Raad Jalal, a professor of geology from Kirkuk University," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq

Basra:
#1: Two policemen were injured by British soldiers in Sa’ad square central Basra today morning. The policemen were in their pickup truck, police spokesman said.
#2: An Iraqi army, 1st battalion convoy were attacked by RPG7 rockets in Al Qibla area, 5 miles west of Basra city. Two military vehicles were damaged with no human causalities.
#3: Violence also hit the southern city of Basra, with gunmen killing one police officer and wounding another in an attack on their patrol, police said.
#5: Police also reported that the chief of customs in Basra, Col. Khalaf al-Badran, escaped injury when a roadside bomb struck his convoy as it left the airport
#6: And a fuel tanker was damaged when it was hit by a roadside bomb, police said.
Gunmen ambushed a British military supply convoy in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Monday in a clash that left a fuel tanker ablaze and at least one badly burned body on the street. Jubilant Iraqis dragged the corpse away from the burning truck and danced around it, flashing victory signs at press photographers. "At about 3:15 pm (1115 GMT) a British convoy came under attack from small arms fire as a result of that a petrol tanker caught fire," a British military spokeswoman said. "One British soldier was evacuated from the scene."
A British soldier and an Iraqi civilian were killed in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Monday after a military supply convoy was ambushed by gunmen, the defence ministry here said. "It is with deep sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a UK soldier has died as a result of wounds that he sustained," the defence ministry said in a statement.
#7: Heavy clashes erupted between Shi'ite militiamen and British forces near the provincial governor's office in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Monday. A Reuters reporter in Basra, Iraq's second largest city, said he could hear machine-gun fire and blasts from rocket-propelled grenades some 200 metres from the governor's office in central Basra. There was no immediate word about the clashes from British forces deployed in Basra.

Afghanistan:
#1: At least 10 tankers, carrying oil for the U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, were destroyed early Monday morning when two missiles hit them at a Pakistani border area, witnesses said. The private NNI news agency quoted the witnesses as saying that the tankers caught fire at the Pakistani border town of Torkhum, in North West Frontier Province. No one was hurt in the attack at 4 a.m. local time. Witnesses said that the missiles were fired at tankers, standing at a parking lot near the border.
#2: The bodies of 11 of the policemen were recovered Sunday, a day after they were killed by Taliban fighters in the southern province of Helmand, a police commander said on condition of anonymity. They were moved to Kabul, where they had come from, the commander said. News of the killings was brought by a sole surviving policeman who made it to the town of Gereshk a day after the bloody incident, the official added.
#3: Three more policemen, including a district counter-criminal chief, were killed in the eastern province of Nangarhar Monday by a remotely controlled bomb similar to those regularly used by Taliban, a police spokesman said. "Seven other policemen were injured. It was the work of the Taliban," provincial police spokesman Abdul Ghafoor said.
#4: The US-led coalition said meanwhile that soldiers fought militants for 14 hours Sunday in Helmand's district of Sangin, where the extremist militia's top commander Mullah Dadullah was found dead 10 days ago. There were "several confirmed enemy deaths," the coalition said in a statement. The Afghan defense ministry said separately "during this operation 25 of our enemies were killed." They included a Taliban group commander, it said. The fighting started when a patrol was attacked three kilometers (two miles) from the Sangin district center, which was brought under government control in early April after being in Taliban hands. Attackers were reinforced by about 50 men who arrived on foot and in small boats down the Helmand River, the coalition said. Air support was called in and bombed seven compounds. The warplanes were also directed against fighters spotted repositioning for an ambush, it said.
#5: BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (May 21) – One Afghan civilian was wounded when two rockets detonated near the perimeter of the base here this morning. The Afghan, who was lightly wounded by shrapnel, was taken to an ISAF medical facility here for evaluation and treatment. An ISAF explosives ordnance team destroyed two unlaunched rockets.
#6: Five S.C. National Guard soldiers assigned to Task Force Phoenix were injured Sunday when a suicide bomber on foot attacked their convoy in Gardez. The blast, which happened in a crowded marketplace, killed 14 civilians and wounded 31, according to reports. Two soldiers were evacuated for treatment, said Maj. John House, task force spokesman.
