The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

Security Incidents for Wednesday, July 04, 07

(1) MNF-Iraq is reporting the death of a Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldier from enemy action in a southern neighborhood of Baghdad on Wednesday, July 4th.

(2) The Canadian Globe and Mail is reporting the deaths of six NATO soldiers plus their Afghan interpreter in an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, July 4th. The nationalities of the six soldiers have not been released at this time, nor the exact province the attack occurred in.

Reuters is quoting a "senior Canadian military official" as confirming that the six NATO soldiers who died in a roadside bomb blast on Wednesday, July 4th, were all Canadians. The NATO confirmation of the deaths can be found here.

#1: One person on board a U.S. military helicopter was killed when the aircraft was forced down in northern Iraq on Wednesday, a military spokesman said. The spokesman said it was unclear if the helicopter had taken ground fire, adding the incident was under investigation. Diyala Prv:
#1: U.S. forces backed by aircraft killed an estimated 25 gunmen during a clash north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the military said on Wednesday. It said in a statement that the fighting took place during a three-day operation that ended on Monday near the town of Mukhisa in Diyala province, where 10,000 American and Iraqi troops are engaged in a major offensive against al Qaeda. Gunmen attacked a U.S. patrol along the Diyala river, it said. Other guerrillas armed with rocket-propelled grenades joined the fight, prompting U.S. ground forces to call in air support, it added, without specifying the day of the clash. It said an estimated 25 gunmen were killed. It was unclear if there were any American casualties.

Baiji:
#1: A suicide car bomber killed three policemen and four civilians outside a restaurant in Baiji, 180 km (120 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. Eighteen people were wounded.


Tikrit:
#1: Gunmen killed an Iraqi soldier at a fake checkpoint near Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

Darbedikhan:
#1: Wednesday morning, police found beheaded body for unidentified man at Azban plain in Darbedikhan (66 km south of Suleimaniya in the north of Iraq).



Afghanisyan:
#1: A German citizen has vanished in Afghanistan and the government believes he was most likely abducted, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

#2: At least four soldiers were killed and six injured Wednesday in a roadside explosion in Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan, officials said. "A military convoy moving from the town of Bannu to Mir Ali was hit by an improvised explosive device at around 0525 GMT," a senior military officer said on condition of anonymity. The attack came in the semi-autonomous North Waziristan tribal district

#3: The rebels attacked three police checkpoints in the southern province of Ghazni yesterday, leaving 13 militants and one policeman dead.

#4: Another seven of the insurgents were also killed in clashes with Afghan and American forces in neighbouring Zabul province.

#5: A roadside bomb tore through a NATO vehicle on Wednesday, killing six soldiers and their Afghan interpreter in a southern Afghan region that has recently seen heavy fighting, a NATO statement said. NATO did not release the soldiers' nationalities or the location of the attack, but Afghan police said it happened in Kandahar province's Zhari district. The majority of the troops in Kandahar are Canadian.
