The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

Security incidents:


Baghdad:
#1: The Iraqi army killed seven gunmen and arrested 41 others during last 24 hours in different parts of Iraq, the Ministry of Defence said.

#2: "Two explosive devices simultaneously detonated, this afternoon, near a police commandos vehicle patrol in central Baghdad, wounding three people, including a policeman," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq

#3: The same source also said that a roadside bomb went off near an Iraqi army vehicle patrol in Arab Jubur area in southern Baghdad, killing a soldier and wounding three more.

#4: Iraqi police accused U.S. military of shooting randomly in an intersection in Al Bunouk area in Baghdad. Iraqi police said five civilians were injured.

#5: Police found five dead bodies throughout Baghdad. 1 in Sleikh, 1 in Washash, 1 in Amil, 1 in Doura, 1 in Saidiyah

Baquba:
#1: In the northern city of Baquba, the capital of Diyala province, armed clashes erupted between Iraqi forces and gunmen after troops raided a village in the north, Iraqi police sources said. A gunman and a woman were killed and another woman was wounded in the fighting, the sources added.

Balad Ruz:
#1: the same sources said a police lieutenant was shot dead by gunmen on his way to work in Balad Ruz in south Diyala province.


Basra:
#1: At least one pupil has been killed and seven others badly wounded in a devastating attack targeting a school in Basra city suburbs. An explosive charge went off at a private elementary school in Hakimiya neighbourhood in Basra, 550 kilometres south of Baghdad.


Dour:
#1: Iraqi police found one dead body in Dour. The deceased was a member of the awakening council in the area.


Dhuluiya:
#1: Gunmen killed three tribesmen, members of a local "Awakenings Council" aligned to U.S. forces, in a drive-by shooting in Dhuluiya, 70 km (45 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.


Baiji:
#1: Iraqi police said American military shot and killed 3 men and one woman and injured one woman in their car on a road near Beiji city north of Baghdad.


Kirkuk:
#1: A car rigged with explosives went off targeting an Iraqi army vehicle in al-Howaiyja district in western Kirkuk, injuring seven people, including two soldiers," Director of districts and neighborhoods in Kirkuk Brigadier Sarhad Qader told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq

A car bomb targeted Iraqi army patrol in Al Hawija today. Three soldiers were killed and 11 civilians were injured.

#2: Meanwhile, the brigadier said that another car bomb exploded a few minutes after the first explosion in southern Kirkuk, without causing any casualties," he also added.

#3: Three civilians, including two women, were wounded in a shooting by a foreign security firm in northeastern Kirkuk, a local official security source said on Thursday. "Three civilians were injured when security company personnel opened fire on their vehicle in northeastern Kirkuk," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

#4: Police found a chopped head in Al Hawija west of Kirkuk today. Police identified the man as Mohammed Abdul Aziz an integrity committee employee. His body was found two days ago in a different area.


Mosul:
#1: Two policemen and a civilian were killed when a roadside bomb exploded near a police patrol in the northern city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

Fallujah:
#1: Police killed three gunmen and arrested 10 others north of Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, police said.



Afghanistan:
#1: Taliban used heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades to ambush a U.S.-led coalition patrol in southern Afghanistan that wounded nine troops, a coalition statement said Thursday. The insurgents attacked the patrol near Kandahar city Wednesday, the statement said. "The coalition forces repelled the attempted ambush using small arms fire to counterattack the enemy," it said. None of the wounds sustained by coalition troops were serious, the statement said. There were no report of insurgent casualties.

#2: In the east, a roadside bomb on a police vehicle close to the border with Pakistan killed an officer and wounded three others in Khost province, said Sher Ahmad Kochi, a police officer.
