The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

U.S. helicopter shot down in Afghanistan:

A helicopter belonging to U.S.-led coalition troops was shot down by small-arms fire south of the Afghan capital on Wednesday, but there were no serious injuries to those on board, the U.S. military said. The pilots landed the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter safely and evacuated all personnel before it caught fire in the Kharwar district of Logar province, where Taliban militants are known to be active. "Coalition forces cleared the area using helicopters, show-of-force and firing warning rounds before using precision-guided munitions to destroy the helicopter," the U.S. military said.

A helicopter of US-led troops has been shot down by small-arms fire to the south of the Afghan capital.

Baghdad:
#1: An Iraqi employee was killed on Wednesday in a bomb explosion in northern Baghdad. “One of the street cleaners was killed by a bomb blast near Adhamiyah municipality in northern Baghdad while on duty,” the secretariat said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq.

#2: Tuesday Police found three dead bodies throughout Baghdad, one in Talbiyah, one in Saidiyah, one in Dora.

#3: Gunmen fired four mortar rounds from Amil area targeting the Scania complex currently used as a U.S. military camp in southern Baghdad at 2 a.m. Wednesday. The U.S. military returned fire, four 81 mm mortar rounds that hit Amil neighbourhood killing two civilians injuring ten and destroying two houses. No comment was available from the U.S. military at time of publication.

#4: A roadside bomb targeted a U.S. military convoy near Maysaloon Square in the direction of Rubaei Street, east Baghdad at around 10 a.m. said Iraqi Police. No casualties were reported.

Irbil:
#1: Gunmen kidnapped the manager of Noruz Satellite Station, a Kurdish speaking station under the Kurdish Ministry of Information early Wednesday. Azad Argoshi was found in very bad shape on the route to Permam resort in Erbil and has been taken to hospital for treatment.


Suaimaniyah:
Gunmen threw a hand grenade inside the residence of Judge Sarkut Awni Omer in Qalat Daza district, northeastern Suaimaniyah early Wednesday. The greater part of the house was destroyed, but there were no casualties.


Mosul:
#1: Monday A suicide truck bomb targeted the house of tribal sheikh Abdul Razaq Mejbil Al Wagaa in Al Hut village, about 30 miles south of Mosul, killing one civilian and injuring 25 others among them the sheikh and his wife and destroyed five houses.



Afghanistan:
#1: A suicide car bomber hit a convoy of NATO forces on Wednesday, wounding two Canadian soldiers, three policemen and two civilians on a road near the southern town of Spin Boldak which lies on the border with Pakistan, said border police commander Abdul Razaq.

The Canadian military denied reports Wednesday that two Canadian soldiers were wounded in a suicide attack in Afghanistan's troubled Kandahar province. The Canadian military said that a mounted patrol was hit by a suicide bomber in a vehicle, but no Canadian personnel were injured and there was no damage to Canadian vehicles.

#2: Four Taliban insurgents were killed while planting a roadside bomb late on Tuesday in Ghazni province to the southwest of Kabul, an official said.

#3: Eight Taliban fighters were killed in a clash with Afghan army after the militants ambushed an army convoy on Tuesday in Kandahar province, the Defence Ministry said.

#4: At least three policemen were killed Wednesday when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a convoy of the provincial governor in Afghanistan's south-western province of Nimroz, officials said.Governor of Nimroz Ghulam Dastagir Azad was on his way back to the provincial capital Zaranj after visiting a construction project in Khash Rod district when the blast took place.Two civilians were also killed in the attack
