The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

Real reason for hope, comfort

Most people today use the word "hope" to sum up their feelings about something they would like to happen. People "hope" to pass exams or find employment. They "hope" their health or that of a loved one will improve.

In the context of encouraging his friends to be faithful, the Apostle Paul writes: "God our Father loves us. He is kind and has given us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope." (2 Thessalonians Chapter 2, Verse 16)

I recall a women patient, several years ago, proped up in her bed. She got a family member to go home for her TV, she watched praise be and then went to be with her Lord. Sadly and by no means as a critisism, this is not always true, even among professing Christians.

She had a real reason for hope such as that which evidently meant so much to the Apostle Peter: "Praise God, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ, God is good, and by raising Jesus from death, he has given us new life and a hope that lives on." (1 Peter 1, Verse 3)

May this hope be yours.
