The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

Reported security incidents
#1: According to local authorities in Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan, at least 6 militants were killed or injured following military operation in this province. Dr. Fazal Karim Muslim district chief for Syedabad quoted by a statement released by provincial governor media office said at least 3 militants were killed and 3 others were injured following an airstrike by NATO recently. The statement further added, the militants were attacked while they were planting improvised explosive device at Salar area in Syedabad district during the night time.

#2: Afghan and coalition forces killed eight insurgents, detained four and cleared six improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, July 4. NATO-led International Security Assistance Force following a statement announced, Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared two IEDs, one in Ab Band district and one in Qarah Bagh district at Ghazni province . Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces killed two insurgents and detained three during a small arms engagement in Dehyak district. The source further added, Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces killed one insurgent during a small arms engagement in Qalandar district of eastern Khowst province Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared an IED in Khowst district.
