U.S. Marine killed in rocket attack yesterday is identified as Staff Sgt. Louis F. Cardin, of Temecula, California. Cardin was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The linked CNN story further explains that the location was a forward firebase set up just a few days earlier to support the assault on Mosul. Presumably IS forward positions spotted the marines moving in and targeted them.
